Construction is planned for a new “environmentally friendly” timber football stadium, intended for the “greenest team in the world.” The project, led by Ecotricity, will feature an entirely wooden 5,000-seat stadium for Forest Green Rovers (FGR), alongside 1,700 parking spaces and a business park, situated near junction 13 of the M5 in Gloucestershire. Stroud District Council granted approval on Tuesday for the stadium’s layout, scale, and external appearance. During the meeting, Colin Peake, a life member of Forest Green Rovers, commented that the facility “will make a massive statement” to those visiting. FIFA previously characterized the football club as the “greenest team in the world,” following the adoption of player kits made from recycled plastic and coffee grounds, and the club’s implementation of a vegan-only menu. Additionally, the United Nations recognized FGR as the world’s first carbon-neutral football club due to its ecological initiatives. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that the existing stadium is slated for demolition under these plans, to be replaced by 95 homes. Attendees at the meeting were informed that the new stadium’s design incorporates climate change considerations, integrating energy efficiency measures and resilience against extreme weather conditions. Mr. Peake stated: “Whoever has ownership or takes over the running of this football club since 1889, all of us, including Dale Vince, are just temporary custodians. But each and every one of us has had the same objective which is to leave it in a better place for a future generation to enjoy. It will make a massive statement to those coming into the district by creating a first impression and a vision of what Stroud is all about.” Councillor Robert Brown indicated that two of the six adjacent parish councils had raised concerns regarding parking on match days. He recommended that Forest Green Rovers implement a parking fee that is sufficiently low “so it doesn’t discourage visitors from parking on site.” The councillors’ vote to approve the proposals was unanimous. Furthermore, the committee also sanctioned separate plans for the demolition of Forest Green Rovers New Lawn Stadium, located at Forest Green in Nailsworth, to facilitate the construction of up to 95 new homes. The club initially received outline planning permission for the 5,000-seat ground in December 2019. For further updates, BBC Gloucestershire can be followed on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
