Ruben Amorim, the 39-year-old manager of Sporting, indicated that Manchester United supporters might perceive him as “the new Alex Ferguson has arrived” should his current squad defeat Manchester City on Tuesday. This Champions League fixture against his prospective club’s city rivals is one of two remaining matches Amorim will oversee for Sporting before his move to Old Trafford. During his pre-match news conference, Amorim stated, “If the result is very negative, expectations will drop and I don’t think that’s a bad starting point, when you begin at Manchester United.” He continued, “If we win, they’ll think the new Sir Alex Ferguson has arrived, which is very difficult to maintain.” Amorim also acknowledged, “I’m fully aware that I’m going to be judged as a manager on this game, and only on this game, and I realise what people can take from this depending on the result.” Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired in 2013 after 26 years as Manchester United boss, secured 38 trophies during his tenure. He is set to depart from his position as club ambassador at the conclusion of the current season. Sporting has achieved victory in 14 of their last 15 matches across all competitions, with their sole defeat this season being in the Portuguese Super Cup.
