According to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Manchester United players who were not selected should “reflect” on Amad Diallo’s performance. United manager Ruben Amorim made the decision to exclude both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the squad for the match against Manchester City. In a fixture some have termed the ‘Diallo derby’, the 22-year-old winger delivered a significant and decisive impact. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Whitwell stated: “He [Amorim] had left Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of the squad entirely, He said afterwards that the result wasn’t important in the bearing of that decision, but I do feel the result gives the players the belief that: ‘Yeah, we need to understand what this guy is asking for and follow it and we can actually win at places like Manchester City,,” Whitwell further elaborated: “But, overall, the result does hinge a lot on Amad’s performance – a brilliant individual display in those closing minutes. He had done well prior to that in the running in behind and showing real aggression off the ball. That is probably something for those players who want to be in that position to reflect on.” Amorim’s desire for his players to exhibit aggression, diligent running, and exceptional effort was undeniably demonstrated by Amad during the match. Amorim’s approach was described as an emotionally intelligent reaction to the situation. The upcoming responses from both players and Amorim himself are anticipated with interest.
