German forward Alexandra Popp concluded her international career, participating in her last match during Germany’s 2-1 friendly defeat against Australia. She has scored 67 goals for Germany. The 33-year-old had previously declared her retirement from international football in September, having first represented Germany in 2010. Her 145th appearance for Germany took place in Duisburg. This came three days after she was absent from Germany’s 4-3 victory against England at Wembley. Popp, a player for Wolfsburg and scorer of 67 international goals, was substituted in the 15th minute as part of a pre-arranged plan, departing the field in tears before 26,263 spectators at the MSV-Arena. Popp’s career highlights include an Olympic gold medal with Germany in 2016. She participated in four Women’s World Cups, serving as captain in France in 2019 and during the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand. Furthermore, she guided Germany to the final of the 2022 European Championship, where they were defeated in extra time by Sarina Wiegman’s England squad. Popp remains under contract with Wolfsburg, the club she has represented since 2012, until June of next year.
