Danny Cowley, head coach for Colchester United, stated that alleged racist incidents occurring during two of the team’s matches serve as a severe condemnation of society. These remarks from Cowley followed a report by a United player who experienced racial abuse from spectators after Saturday’s goalless draw against Fleetwood Town. This incident represents the second occasion this season that law enforcement has investigated alleged racist abuse targeting a Colchester player, with a comparable report having been made in August. Cowley commented, “It’s something we’ve got to keep fighting against as a football club, as a sport and as a society.” Cowley indicated that he learned of an incident during the November game, further stating that it was “really disappointing” to be informed of it. He conveyed to the BBC, “Unfortunately it doesn’t reflect well on society.” “It’s only one person and we have to remember this, but it’s being dealt with,” he added. He continued, “We all know there’s no place for it and we want to treat each other with the respect we all deserve. “We have to keep working and fighting as a game, as a society, because we live in the 21st Century – surely we’re not still talking about these issues?” Cowley commended Fleetwood for its “proactive” approach in addressing the allegation. The club from Lancashire had previously stated its cooperation with the police investigation and affirmed that it treats all discrimination reports “incredibly seriously”. In August, Samson Tovide, a striker for the U’s, reported experiencing racial abuse during a 1-1 draw against Accrington Stanley. Cowley mentioned his understanding that an investigation into this particular incident is currently ongoing. For updates on Essex news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
