St Johnstone midfielder Sven Sprangler characterized Wednesday night’s loss to St Mirren as a “bitter pill to swallow,” marking the first defeat for manager Simo Valakari since taking charge of the club. The Finn had commenced his tenure in the Perth dugout with a victory, securing a late win against Dundee, but his team was unable to replicate that success in Paisley. They suffered a 3-1 loss despite Benjamin Kimpioka giving them an early lead. “It was tough to take, to be honest, because I think we played well,” Sprangler communicated via St Johnstone’s official website. He added, “We managed to score three goals in the first half, albeit two of them were ruled out.” Sprangler further noted the opposition’s strategy in the second half: “In the second half they put on some more pressure with high balls and set-pieces. We defended well but they kept the pressure going.” Reflecting on his team’s offensive struggles, he stated, “We had a lot of possession but did not create too many chances in the second half. So it was very disappointing to go back home with no points.” Despite the disappointing outcome for St Johnstone, which leaves the Perth-based club in ninth place in the Premiership standings, Sprangler was recognized as one of the team’s standout performers. The Austrian player is anticipated to retain his position in midfield when the Saints play host to Hearts on Saturday afternoon. “It was a bitter pill to swallow on Wednesday but the good thing is we have another game at the weekend,” Sprangler remarked. He continued, “We can show what we can do and go for the three points.” Addressing the upcoming opponent, he acknowledged, “Hearts are behind us in the table but we know they have quality.”
