Bristol Rovers’ women’s team has advanced to the fourth round of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in their history. Defender Layah Douglas stated that the team is “up for the challenge” following their draw against Aston Villa, a club from the Women’s Super League. The team, known as the Gas Girls, secured their spot in the fourth round by overcoming Oxford United 3-2 on Sunday, having initially been 2-1 behind. Rovers currently compete in the National League Division One South West, which represents the fourth tier within the English women’s football structure. Douglas shared her sentiments with BBC Radio Bristol, remarking, “I was saying to one of our team-mates only a few seasons ago we were literally playing in parks and now we’re in the fourth round of the FA Cup against a WSL team – it just feels surreal.” She added, “As a squad we’re all up for the challenge.” The women’s team at Rovers was re-established five years ago, filling a void that had existed since 2005. Their promotion last spring marked their third in a span of four seasons, and in April, their financial operations were integrated with those of the men’s team. This season, they have been hosting their home matches at the Memorial Ground. Douglas credited manager Nathan Hallett-Young and the broader club staff for their contributions to the team’s rapid development. She stated, “With the amount of effort that goes into it behind the scenes with the coaching staff and the players I’m not surprised we’ve got this far.” The upcoming match against Villa, who are currently seventh in the WSL, while Rovers hold fifth place in the fourth tier, is scheduled for Sunday, 12 January, at Poundland Bescot Stadium. Douglas commented, “It’s going to be a ridiculously tough game but I think we’re all buzzing – we’re all up for it. The magic of the FA Cup – it’s a one-off game so we’ve just got to see what we can get out of it.” She concluded, “We’ve just got to treat it as any other game. It’s a massive occasion but at the end of the day we’re there to play and we’ve just got to remember that going into it.” Post navigation Dundee Manager Tony Docherty Provides Update on Vetro, Upcoming Aberdeen Match, and New Training Facility West Ham Manager Lopetegui Dismisses Speculation Regarding His Future
