The Women’s Super League is experiencing one of its most tightly contested relegation battles, with a mere two points separating the teams in the bottom half of the standings. Crystal Palace, a new addition to the league, currently occupies the last position with five points, trailing West Ham and Leicester solely due to goal difference. Aston Villa and Everton each secured their initial victories of the season during the recent weekend, advancing to six points, while Tottenham holds seventh place with seven points. Fara Williams, a former England midfielder, commented on the situation during the Women’s Football Show, stating: “Villa definitely shouldn’t be there [near the bottom] given their squad. They have a squad which is certainly capable of competing higher up. Now they’ve got their first win under their belts I’m sure they will start to pick up more points.” She further noted the encouraging aspect for teams at the bottom, observing: “When you look at the teams in the bottom, they will be looking at it as being a win away from jumping five spaces in the league. That gives the teams down there confidence.” Crystal Palace began the season widely considered one of the primary candidates for relegation; however, former England midfielder Anita Asante suggests that they have “shown they have enough in their performances to rise in the table.” Additional analysis is available on the Women’s Football Show, which features highlights from all six matches played over the weekend.
