A 21-year-old individual, aiming to be the inaugural woman and the youngest person to undertake a solo row from mainland Europe to South America, has successfully covered her initial 1,000 miles (1,609km). Zara Lachlan, a resident of Cambridge, commenced her journey from the Portuguese Algarve on 27 October, maintaining a rowing schedule of up to 20 hours daily since her departure. Ms. Lachlan stated that she had encountered “the toughest past of the row,” involving “very long hours of rowing in slow conditions” merely to advance. The recent graduate intends to complete a 3,600 nautical mile (6,668km) row to French Guiana within approximately 90 days, with an additional goal of encouraging other women to engage in fitness activities. “I’m around the Canaries now and can see land,” Ms Lachlan reported. She added, “Once past the Canaries, the weather is much more predictable across the Atlantic – which will be nice.” Despite confronting difficult weather conditions and headwinds, her social media updates have documented encounters with various marine creatures, such as dolphins, a penguin, and an octopus that adhered to her para anchor. An encounter with orcas, known for sinking small vessels, was less favorably received by Ms. Lachlan. She anticipates a loss of one-third of her body weight, and her provisions consist of 5,500 kcal of meals and snacks daily. Claire Lachlan, her mother, who reportedly shed tears upon the initial mention of the challenge, commented: “We are so incredibly proud of Zara – it has been a monumental effort to get her to the Canaries through some really tough conditions.” Ms. Lachlan is engaged in fundraising efforts for Women In Sport and Team Forces, the latter being a charitable organization dedicated to enhancing “the lived experience for the armed forces community through the power of sport, challenge and adventure.” Maj Gen Lamont Kirkland, the chief executive of Team Forces, remarked: “She’s not had it easy during this first and most difficult stage of the row, yet she’s shown true courage and tenacity about the task in hand.” Upon her return, the Loughborough University physics graduate intends to enlist in the Army as a technical officer.
