Paralympic champion Jenny Holl and road cyclist Oscar Onley were honored with the main accolades at the Scottish Cycling Awards. Onley was recognized as male rider of the year, a distinction he earned by becoming the first Scottish-developed cyclist to participate in the Tour de France. Concurrently, Holl received the female rider of the year award for her role in guiding Sophie Unwin to a gold medal in both the individual pursuit and road race, a silver in the road time trial, and a bronze in the equivalent track event in Paris. Holl, a 25-year-old from Stirling, also secured three silver medals during the World Cycling Championships held in Rio de Janeiro. Kelso’s Onley, 22, commenced the year by achieving a victory atop Willunga Hill at the Tour Down Under. This was followed by a Tour of Britain campaign where the Scottish rider claimed the young riders’ classification and finished second in the general standings. Onley’s competitors for the award included Olympic medalists Jack Carlin and Paralympic champion Fin Graham. For her part, Holl faced competition from Neah Evans, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, and mountain biker Heather Wilson. Among the other accolades presented, Graham’s impressive C1-3 road race gold medal performance at the Paris Paralympics was chosen by the public as the moment of the year.
