Frank Lampard’s initial four games as manager have resulted in a sequence of a draw, a win, a loss, and another win. The Coventry City boss is set to lead his team against Portsmouth at Fratton Park this Saturday, expressing significant encouragement regarding the Sky Blues’ developing offensive capabilities. Despite scoring only five goals in his four games as manager, City has generated 49 attempts on goal in the last three fixtures alone. “It says something about the way we play,” Lampard stated to BBC CWR. He added, “The next step is to be more clinical about the way we take them. That’s not easy because it’s an easy thing to say. We can practise through the week but, when you have some developing players as we do, you have to understand you might not take all your chances. Players need to find confidence, they need repetitive work and feeling, to be confident at that end of the pitch. But it’s a nice sign for the team that we are creating.” The team’s performance has been impacted by the absence of US international striker Haji Wright, who has missed six games due to an ankle injury. However, Ephron Mason-Clark has contributed significantly, scoring three of the five goals since Lampard took charge. Regarding player availability for the match at Fratton Park, Lampard indicated that goalkeeper Ben Wilson, who has been sidelined for 12 games due to a knee injury, is nearer to returning to play than the team’s leading scorer, Wright, who has seven goals. “Ben’s been training the last day or two with us, fully training which is good news,” the Sky Blues head coach stated. He further added, “He won’t be available this weekend but he won’t be far.” Concerning Wright, Lampard noted, “Haji is not on the pitch with us yet. We’ll miss him for a few games more because they come thick and fast so we’re looking at the early part of the New Year.” Frank Lampard’s comments were made during an interview with Clive Eakin of BBC CWR.
