Goalkeeper Brian Maher has signed a new two-year deal with Derry City, securing his presence at the club until 2026. Maher has made 128 appearances for Derry since joining in 2022. The 24-year-old arrived at the start of 2022 from Bray Wanderers and has since accumulated over 100 appearances for the club. The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international contributed to the Candystripes’ FAI Cup victory in 2022, when they defeated Shelbourne 4-0 in the final match. Speculation regarding the Dublin native’s future arose after Derry’s FAI Cup final defeat to Drogheda in November, as his contract was set to expire following that game. However, despite receiving offers “in Ireland and beyond,” according to Derry, Maher has chosen to prolong his tenure at the Brandywell under the leadership of new boss Tiernan Lynch. “I am absolutely delighted to extend my contract with Derry City. Derry has been my home for the last three years and I have built up a special relationship with the supporters and that is something that I cherish,” he communicated to the club’s website. “After sitting down with those around me and taking a bit of time to weigh everything up I decided this was where I wanted to be and to try put right what happened at the end of last year.” “Having spoken to Tiernan and listening to his plans for the club, I am excited to play my part, and I look forward to getting stuck in.” Maher’s commitment makes him the second player in recent days to extend his stay with the club, following midfielder Adam O’Reilly, who also penned a two-year extension on Sunday.
