Essex County Cricket Club has secured new one-year contracts for batter Nick Browne and pace bowler Jamal Richards, extending their commitments through the 2025 county season. Browne first played first-class cricket for Essex in 2013. The left-handed Browne has accumulated nearly 9,000 runs across all cricket formats, featuring 20 first-class centuries, four of which were double centuries. In 2024, he participated in only six County Championship matches, achieving a top score of 184, and also played seven games in the One-Day Cup. Richards, aged 20, emerged as Essex’s top wicket-taker in the 50-over competition, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 24.86. Jason Gallian, the cricket committee chair, commented that Richards’ 2024 performances signified “a huge stride forward in his development”. Browne, a native of Leytonstone within the county, was part of the squad that secured the championship titles in 2017 and 2019, as well as the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020. The Bob Willis Trophy marked their most recent championship victory. This summer, the team concluded the season in fourth place in Championship Division One, following two wins and a draw in their last three matches. Browne stated, “I’m still as hungry as ever for runs, and I’m keen to make my Testimonial Year one to remember on the field too.” Jamal Richards has not yet made an appearance for Essex in either the County Championship or the T20 Blast.
