Hugo Lloris, who previously captained Tottenham, has indicated that the club’s relocation from White Hart Lane might have influenced its capacity to contend for the Premier League championship. Tottenham played their home fixtures at Wembley Stadium throughout the entire 2017-18 season and for all but five games in the 2018-19 season, during the period they awaited their move into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In their concluding season at White Hart Lane, Mauricio Pochettino’s team secured a second-place finish in the league, seven points adrift of champions Chelsea. Subsequently, they finished third in their complete season at Wembley and fourth in 2018-19, though they were behind winners Manchester City by 23 and 27 points, respectively. Lloris stated on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast: “My big question mark is what would have happened if we’d stayed at the old White Hart Lane.” “When we left this stadium, I think we were more ready than ever to compete for the Premier League.” “But we had to move to Wembley and adapt to a new stadium and try to make it like our own stadium. But it was not the case.” “We managed to keep the consistency, stay in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.” “But the only miss we can feel is a trophy.”
