A roofer from Britain expressed his confidence in anticipation of competing internationally on behalf of his nation. Joseph Gallagher, 26, a resident of Altrincham, Greater Manchester, is scheduled to journey to Innsbruck, Austria, this week for the World Championships of Young Roofers. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), a trade organization, selected him to represent his country at this elite competition. The apprentice roofer stated his intention to “give it my best shot” following several months of “very serious” preparation. Previously an RAF engineer, he transitioned to his family’s enterprise, Gallagher Roofing, where he is currently employed while pursuing studies in roof slating and tiling at Bolton College. He mentioned that he was unaware of the existence of an international competition for the world’s top young roofers but felt “honoured” to have been selected to represent the UK. Mr Gallagher’s selection by the NFRC places him as a member of a two-person team for the world championship, commencing on Wednesday. Competitors receive a rig and a scaled-down roof model, and their performance is evaluated across three distinct sections over a period of three days. Teams representing Europe, China, and Russia are anticipated to participate in the biennial event, vying for titles in the facade, flat roof, pitched roof, or metal roof categories. Mr Gallagher explained that competitive roofing involved “teaching you to be fast.” He further noted, “But, if it’s rough and doesn’t look tidy and neat, it’s not going to win any prizes.” A team of NFRC roofers at the Centre for Roofing Excellence in Hereford has provided coaching to Mr Gallagher. His preparation has involved practicing Austrian-style roofing, which he described as more intricate than the UK’s approach. He elaborated, “It’s the amount of insulation, counter battens, tiling, felting, vapour control layers – it’s a lot to get in.” He added, “Technique and skills are the same, it’s just the products are so different.” Mr Gallagher expressed that returning home as a victor would be “fantastic.” He affirmed, “I’m feeling confident.”
