A boxing initiative has received commendation for its “powerful impact” on youth. The project, named In Your Corner, operated by Goole Youth Action, targets individuals aged 11 and above who are experiencing difficulties with education, interpersonal connections, or self-assurance, or who might be at risk of engaging in antisocial conduct later on. Participants in the program learn fundamental boxing techniques alongside essential life skills, including nutrition, physical fitness, and culinary instruction. Councillor Victoria Aitken, who serves as East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for children, families, and education, stated that such initiatives have the potential to “really help a young person and provide that early intervention that changes their life course.” Aitken personally visited the project to observe its effects and engaged in conversation with a young individual who had not been in an educational setting for two years. “After completing the programme, the young person is now back at school, in full time education – demonstrating what a powerful impact the course has had,” she remarked. Additionally, a dedicated youth support worker is available to assist each participant in maximizing their benefit from the program. Referrals to the program are facilitated through the council’s youth offending team, safer communities, and young people’s support and safeguarding services. Participation in the program is entirely voluntary for all young individuals involved.
