Commemorative events took place throughout Yorkshire for Remembrance Sunday, honoring military personnel who died in wars. In cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, York, and Bradford, hundreds convened to place wreaths and show their reverence. A two-minute period of silence was observed nationwide at 11:00 GMT, with the King leading a ceremony at the Cenotaph in central London. Concurrently, the football derby featuring Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday was rescheduled to 12:30 GMT, enabling supporters to participate in memorial services. At Leeds Civic Hall, armed forces personnel were accompanied by the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, the Bishop of Kirkstall the Rt Rev Arun Arora, Rabbi Anthony Gilbert, Senior Imam Qari Muhammad Asim, and the Very Rev Canon Father Matthew Habron. In Mirfield, hundreds participated in a parade through the town, led by Hammonds Marching Band. This event is considered among the largest Remembrance Sunday parades nationally. Over 50 wreaths were placed at the Doctor Lane war memorial. In Sheffield, members of the community joined military personnel at Barker’s Pool to observe the commemorations. Additionally, within the city, a wreath-laying event occurred at Bramall Lane prior to the Steel City Derby, which commenced at 12:30 GMT following concerns raised by campaigners that its initial 12:00 GMT start time would conflict with memorial services. York Minster hosted a service, where the Great Peter bell rang 11 times preceding the two-minute silence. Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell stated that Remembrance Sunday provided “an opportunity to pause and remember all those whose lives have been lost in war and the pain and suffering caused by conflict that sadly continues in our world today”. At the Bennetthorpe War Memorial, Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones and Civic Mayor Julie Grace each placed a wreath. A parade then proceeded from Bennetthorpe to Baxtergate, concluding at the Minster of St George for a remembrance service. Bradford observed a civic parade, commencing at City Hall and proceeding to the Cenotaph, led by the Dean of Bradford, the Very Rev Andy Bowerman, prior to the Sunset Ceremony held in City Park. The inaugural Commonwealth War Memorial situated outside of London was unveiled next to the Bradford Cenotaph on Wednesday.
