Middle Feast, a restaurant situated on Lendal in York, has announced its intention to once again provide complimentary meals this Christmas, following its distribution of 500 free meals to individuals in need last year. The establishment received commendation from the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, who described it in his Christmas message as “a wonderful example to us all”. The restaurant clarified that while these meals are primarily intended for homeless individuals and refugees, no person experiencing need will be refused service. Wael Garas, the owner, stated that the offer of a free Christmas dinner would also be extended to emergency services personnel and NHS staff. Owner Wael Garas explained his rationale, stating, “Lots of people are working on Christmas day, it’s important they get food too.” He added, “For Christmas day everybody should be happy, and I want to see people smile. I do it to do something nice for people.” Mr. Garas confirmed that the restaurant plans to serve meals on December 25, between 12:00 and 14:00 GMT, consistent with last year’s schedule. He emphasized that all individuals are welcome to attend. He further elaborated, saying, “If you need food the door is open for you.” Mr. Garas added, “I won’t stop anybody from coming in, I won’t ask any questions. I will not close the door on anyone.” Mr. Garas specified that no contributions or donations are requested from those receiving meals. He concluded by stating, “I’m not looking for anything in return, I just do it from my heart.”
