A York-based art company has been selected to create a mural as part of a revitalization project for one of the city’s high streets. Art of Protest is slated to collaborate with local residents to develop concepts for the artwork, which will be situated on Front Street in Acomb, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The City of York Council reported receiving 11 submissions and garnered global interest following its call for proposals for the initiative, which additionally includes the renovation of eight benches. Modifications to the area involve the removal of the majority of the 131 bollards lining the street, which had generated public opposition upon their installation in early 2023. These bollards are slated for replacement with planters and expanded pedestrian crossings, with the completion of this work anticipated by February. This initiative follows the September approval of plans for the revitalization of Front Street. The council estimated the combined cost for the new mural and the renovated benches to be approximately £35,000.
