Wychavon is implementing enhanced security measures across its parks and open spaces with the aim of preventing unauthorised encampments. According to the district council, there has been an increase in instances of illegal camping, with six such occurrences recorded thus far in 2024. A fund of £250,000 has been approved by councillors to put these new security measures into effect, potentially involving installations such as bollards, rails, locks, and overhead barriers. The council has stated that any implemented measures will consider “the look and feel” of the respective areas. Among several sites identified as susceptible to unauthorised encampments are St Richards Open Space in Evesham and Steynors Open Space in Droitwich Spa. Wychavon reports that the cleanup operations following encampments are costly, frequently necessitating the disposal of waste, including human excrement. Beverley Hardman, the authority’s executive board member for boosting natural capital, emphasized the necessity of action due to the effect of encampments on both residents and the council’s financial resources. “The security measures we took to protect Abbey Park in Pershore have proved successful at deterring unauthorised encampments on that site,” she said. “I’m confident similar action at our other vulnerable parks and open spaces will be equally effective.” This work is scheduled to be implemented over the coming two years and will require consultation as needed.
