Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton, despite not having participated in a league match for more than 18 months, is not considered an inexperienced player. Burton is poised to make his league debut for Wrexham this Saturday against Stockport County, following a broken wrist injury sustained by Phil Parkinson’s primary goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo. Should he be selected over seasoned goalkeeper Mark Howard, Burton’s upcoming appearance will mark his first league fixture since May 2023, when he contributed to Plymouth Argyle’s win at Port Vale. During the 2023-24 season, he played only two matches for Argyle, both in the EFL Cup, and was subsequently released by the club at the season’s conclusion. Since joining Wrexham in July, he has participated in four cup competitions, with his most recent outing being a midweek EFL Trophy match at Port Vale. At Vale Park, Burton was substituted at half-time by Howard, as Parkinson aimed to confirm his readiness for the upcoming weekend game. While facing sixth-placed Stockport represents a significant challenge for his return, Burton possesses a career record of over 100 appearances. His career includes a period of regular League One play at Plymouth, experience in League Two with Cambridge United, and stints in the National League representing Chesterfield and Southport. Although Okonkwo’s absence is a setback for Wrexham, Parkinson expresses optimism that Burton will capitalize on this opportunity to make a strong impression.
