Efforts have commenced to transfer a 35-year-old sculpture to its permanent new location within a Nottinghamshire town centre. The 9ft 2ins (2.79m) Water Head, which depicts a tree trunk, is being moved from its previous spot in The Square to a planter situated between the Beeston Centre tram stop and the Arc Cinema. Broxtowe Borough Council, the authority responsible for the statue, indicated that this relocation is part of a renovation initiative designed to create additional space for market stalls and events within Beeston Square, addressing an increasing requirement. The project, which has received funding from the government, is anticipated to be finalized by Friday. This white marble artwork, known locally as ‘the stump’, was designed by artist Paul Mason. The Beeston and District Civic Society reported that it once functioned as a water feature but was decommissioned in the 1990s. A public consultation, organized by the society in August, sought a new location for the art piece, with the council’s planning committee approving the proposal the subsequent month. The authority stated that contractors have begun work on the statue’s reallocation, and the ‘stump’ is projected to be lifted in the coming days. “The relocation will allow more room to be used on Beeston Square for events such as our upcoming Christmas light switch on and more, allowing more room for people to use the space,” it added.
