A woman has been prohibited from owning horses for a decade after acknowledging the neglect of an animal under her supervision. Suzanne Obrey, 44, residing on Martley Rd, Worcester, admitted guilt to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal in a prosecution initiated by the RSPCA. Obrey had been caring for the nine-year-old thoroughbred, named Chocolate Box, under the terms of a loan agreement. However, upon his return to his owners in December 2023, Chocolate Box was described by a veterinary professional who examined him as “very thin, emaciated, with little fat cover.” Providing testimony at Worcester Magistrates’ Court, the vet detailed that the horse’s skin was ulcerated and matted with hair, and that hardened, painful scabs were present on its legs. The vet stated: “In my opinion, Chocolate Box was caused unnecessary suffering, caused by severe untreated skin lesions and malnutrition – the horse’s needs had not been met.” During mitigation, the court was informed that Obrey was an animal enthusiast who had made her best efforts, and that the neglect was a result of incompetence rather than deliberate intent. Alongside the 10-year ban from keeping horses, she was ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid community service and to cover costs amounting to £400. Chocolate Box, having made a complete recovery from his condition, is now back with his owners.
