An individual has confessed to her involvement in managing a brothel located in Suffolk. Shu Choy, aged 68, entered a guilty plea at Ipswich Crown Court concerning a charge of conspiracy to corrupt public morals and a separate charge of possessing criminal property. The court was informed that she possessed a property situated at 64 Upper Orwell Street, Ipswich, and permitted a man to operate the brothel from this location, which was presented as a Chinese medicine establishment. Ms. Choy, whose address is Lorian Close in Barnet, north London, is scheduled for sentencing on 7 February, alongside an additional defendant. The alleged crimes reportedly took place between 12 June 2019 and 19 October 2021. Mingzi Shi, Ms. Choy’s daughter, had faced charges for the identical offences; however, subsequent to Ms. Choy’s plea change to guilty, the prosecution opted not to present evidence against the daughter, leading to her acquittal. Ms. Choy’s admission of guilt occurred just as the trial was scheduled to commence and the jury had been impaneled. Prosecutor Brian Reece stated that Ms. Choy contributed to the operation of a “large scale prostitution business” by receiving “rent” payments from an individual located in China. Mr. Reece indicated that law enforcement had been monitoring the enterprise, prior to two undercover officers entering to verify the services being provided, without availing themselves of those services. A search of the premises was conducted, revealing a wall chart displaying the names of “young women” employed at the location. Telephone records uncovered messages that had been disseminated to promote services, according to court proceedings. Documentation indicated that the typical payment amounted to approximately £120, which was to be divided equally between the “masseurs” and the establishment. Judge David Wilson informed Ms. Choy of the “possibility of a custodial sentence”.
