A woman, facing her initial Christmas following the premature passing of her partner, has described the assistance from a new companion as “vital,” notwithstanding a four-decade age difference between them. Chloe Ball, a 29-year-old resident of Willenhall, Walsall, encountered her 69-year-old friend, Sue, at a grief support group subsequent to the sudden death of her partner, Stu, from cancer on New Year’s Eve 2023. The two individuals developed a strong friendship and have been convening independently of the group to provide mutual support during their period of mourning. Miss Ball stated that observing Sue’s resilience “inspired me to find my own”. Their introduction occurred at a group session held in Willenhall during February. Sue had commenced attending the group after experiencing the loss of her parents and closest friend. “We instantly got on like a house on fire,” Miss Ball recounted. She added, “While there is a 40-year age gap between us, age is just a number, and we just love to have a laugh and sometimes a cry together.” Miss Ball further explained, “I wanted to be there for Sue to make sure she wasn’t isolated in her house, which is what I sadly experienced first hand with my late Nan after she lost her husband.” The 29-year-old mentioned that Sue had also performed a crucial function in assisting her throughout her mourning process. “It’s been a huge help having someone so close who understands how I’m feeling,” she commented. She continued, “Sue has been amazing over the past year, sharing her own experiences with me to remind me that I’m not alone.” The Dove Bereavement Group, which is arranged by Jennifer Ashe & Son Funeral Directors, located in the West Midlands, holds regular meetings in Willenhall. “The group really is just one big friendship group, and I can’t recommend going along to support sessions like this enough to people my age or even younger,” Miss Ball stated.
