A woman has been brought before a court, facing charges related to the possession of a prohibited pit bull terrier implicated in the fatal injury of a man in east London. Leanne McDonnell, aged 32, presented herself at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, where she was accused of either owning or being responsible for the dog involved in the attack on Akif Mustaq on Wednesday morning in Stratford. Prosecutor Ramandeep Mahajan informed the court on Friday that Mr. Mustaq sustained injuries to his neck, windpipe, thumb, and thigh, and subsequently passed away the day after the incident. Ms. McDonnell, residing on Shirley Road in Stratford, refrained from entering any pleas and was released on conditional bail, with an instruction to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 6 January. The court was informed that the mother-of-three had a friendship with Mr. Mustaq, and the incident occurred at her residential flat. According to the charge sheet, it is alleged that Ms. McDonnell neglected to ensure the well-being of the dog, identified as Prince, by keeping it in an “unsuitable environment” characterized by inadequate food and the presence of “items and debris” on the floor. Furthermore, she faces an accusation of possessing a fighting dog, which is prohibited under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Ms. McDonnell is additionally charged with three counts of owning or being in charge of a dog that was dangerously out of control but did not cause injury on 18 November; the court was informed that these incidents involved the same animal. The Metropolitan Police reported that officers responded to Shirley Road at 4:53 GMT on Wednesday, following reports of a 42-year-old man having sustained serious wounds. Mr. Mustaq subsequently died in hospital, and the police force confirmed that the dog had been seized.
