A woman has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a two-year-old boy in a vehicle collision in the Highlands. Iain Mackay, a resident of Wick, died in hospital several days after the two-car incident on the A99, situated between Latheron and Wick. Iain and his mother, Ashlyne, were traveling home from a play park on August 22, 2021, when the crash took place on a bend in the road at Occumster. Sonya Henderson, 47, of Lybster, had been scheduled to face trial at Wick Sheriff Court, but instead entered a guilty plea to causing death by careless driving. Both Iain’s mother and Savanna Nixey, the driver of the car they occupied, sustained injuries. The court heard that police crash investigators concluded Henderson’s Nissan Qashqai had entered the opposing carriageway on the bend prior to the collision. Sheriff Neil Wilson has deferred sentencing until January 21, pending a social work report.
