Efforts have commenced to enhance Wolverhampton’s Central Library and its adult education facilities, forming a component of the broader £61m City Learning Quarter development. The City of Wolverhampton Council announced that Midlands firm Speller Metcalfe has been assigned the responsibility for executing the second phase of this initiative, which is supported by approximately £50m in government funding. Planned enhancements for the library encompass the restoration of its Grade II* listed facade, the addition of a new roof, internal remodelling, a new lobby, and landscaping. Additionally, the Alan Garner Centre, designated for adult education, is scheduled for internal remodelling and the construction of a connecting building to link it with the library’s 1930s extension. Concurrently, building firm McLaughlin & Harvey is constructing a new facility for City of Wolverhampton College, which will vacate its Paget Road site, as reported by the council. Councillor Chris Burden commented that the updated facilities are expected to “improve the life chances for people of all ages through learning, apprenticeship and employment offers”. Ninder Johal, who chairs Wolverhampton’s City Investment Board, stated: “This investment is hugely important to ensuring the city’s Central Library and Adult Education facilities are the best they can be.” Earlier this summer, Speller Metcalfe finalized the initial phase of the City Learning Quarter plan, which involved an £8.1m Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at City of Wolverhampton College’s Wellington Road campus in Bilston. This centre, funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority, is currently operational. Both the library and the adult education centre are slated to remain open while the work is in progress.
