A Wolverhampton-based academy has formed a partnership with a renowned European football club, aiming to cultivate future players. Amethyst Academy has formalized an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), leading to the establishment of the PSG Academy West Midlands. This initiative provides promising young footballers with exposure to the French Ligue 1 club’s contemporary training methodologies and techniques, alongside their ongoing academic studies. According to the academy, it delivers students “an exceptional program that balances top-level football training with academic excellence”. The objective is for young athletes to acquire football skills “the Parisian way”. Alex Harrap, Director of PSG England, stated, “They have technical directors who come over to the UK every year.” He added, “Our technical director visits Paris on a regular basis and has weekly meetings with the team in Paris to ensure that the sessions being delivered in the UK match the standards of the club.” Even the school’s meal plans are modeled after the nutritional regimens of professional clubs, emphasizing carbohydrates and proteins to support fitness. Students pursue their A levels concurrently with their football training, a structure the school asserts ensures “they are well-prepared for life both on and off the pitch”. This collaboration has garnered significant approval among Amethyst’s young footballers. Jack Brownlow, captain of the boys’ team, commented: “I think if you make it international, more people will recognise it as a big thing. Wolves is just around the corner, but if it’s a big club like PSG [it makes] everyone internationally aware of what we’re doing here.” Katie Whitehouse, captain of the girls’ team, echoed this sentiment. She stated, “Definitely for the girls to have that opportunity to do it as well, and to be able to play with the boys, representing PSG, is just great.”
