Woking FC has joined an initiative aimed at enhancing numerical confidence among Surrey residents. The football club has collaborated with Surrey County Council to urge its supporters to enroll in the government-funded Multiply program. Data from the county council indicates that one in seven Surrey residents lack a GCSE equivalent in Mathematics. The council stated its decision to partner with the Surrey-based club was based on the club’s robust community ties. Simon Jones, the business development director for Cards, commented: “Woking FC has always had strong community links, supporting a number of local charities and community initiatives, and we are keen promoters of lifelong learning amongst our own staff and teams.” The curriculum includes courses tailored for individuals in particular professions, such as healthcare or early years education, alongside options beneficial for personal interests like cooking or gardening. Clare Curran of Surrey County Council remarked: “Around half of the UK working age population do not have strong numeracy skills, or don’t feel confident about using numbers. “Multiply has been created to help bridge that numeracy skills gap to help Surrey adults reach their full potential and ensure no one is left behind.” Eligibility for the free Multiply courses extends to Surrey residents aged 19 and above who do not possess a GCSE grade C or an equivalent qualification. These courses are currently accessible and will remain so until March 31, 2025. For further updates, BBC Surrey can be followed on Facebook and X.
