An annual initiative designed to assist pensioners in staying warm this winter has commenced, against a backdrop of concerns that individuals “will struggle more than ever”. The Surviving Winter appeal, managed by the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF), provided assistance to 759 pensioners during 2023. Since its inception in 2010, the appeal has encouraged individuals to contribute their unused Winter Fuel Payment. Although fewer people are eligible for the government grant this year, the charity maintains optimism about reaching its fundraising target. Kelly Hall, the philanthropy director at SCF, stated that the appeal facilitates local residents in aiding “others in hardship at a vulnerable time”. Over £1.5 million has been donated since the Somerset appeal began. However, organisers have observed a decrease in donors this year. The leadership is currently exploring alternative fundraising methods. The charity estimates that a minimum of 10,000 pensioners within the county are presently experiencing fuel poverty, defined as either avoiding heating use or foregoing meals to cover heating expenses. Frank, a recipient of a grant in 2023, recounted: “Last winter I experienced extreme financial hardship. “I had run out of oil in our tank and was unable to heat our water and central heating.” He further explained that the charity’s assistance enabled him to purchase heating oil and “get through the winter”. He concluded: “I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support in these difficult times. We will be forever grateful for your help.” Ms Hall also stated that the charity is concerned that “many pensioners on low incomes will struggle more than ever” this year, given that millions nationwide no longer receive their fuel payments. Nevertheless, the charity remains “hopeful” that it will secure sufficient funds. She further remarked: “Many people have told us how much it means to them to be able to support those living in their community – people who may even be a neighbour.” Post navigation Caribbean Initiative Transforms Problematic Seaweed into Vehicle Fuel National Grid and Red Cross Address Power Outages After Storm Darragh
