Festive events have commenced throughout Wiltshire this week as Christmas approaches. At Salisbury Cathedral, choristers performed by candlelight during the advent procession. To immerse visitors in the festive atmosphere, a magical light trail is available at the National Trust’s Stourhead estate. The following presents a collection of notable images from the county. Regarding Advent, Salisbury Cathedral’s yearly Darkness to Light service, held on 29 November, featured the progressive illumination of over 1,300 candles. This event is recognized as a highly popular occasion within the liturgical year. For after-dark experiences, visitors to the National Trust’s Stourhead can enjoy a magical experience with the annual Christmas light trail across the estate, which continues until 1 January 2025. There is a chance that Santa might be sighted among the trees. In what was described as “no ordinary assignment,” the works yard team at Salisbury Cathedral faced the challenging responsibility of moving a 29ft high Christmas tree into the structure. This Nordmann Fir tree, sourced from Longleat Forest, will remain there until Candlemas on 2 February. In the realm of science fiction, Star Wars enthusiasts had the opportunity to view their preferred characters closely in anticipation of an auction of movie memorabilia in Chippenham. Luke Kaye, who previously managed Skywalkers costume shop in Swindon, is selling these film props and outfits. Regarding waste, Chris Watts, a councillor for Swindon Borough Council, was photographed amidst vibrant recycling bales. This follows the council’s £1m investment in a new recycling machine. The expectation is that this equipment will enhance recycling rates locally and generate revenue for the council by selling recycled materials. For a sweet option, Salisbury confectioners Rolys have crafted an impressive diorama of the world heritage site Stonehenge, referred to as “Fudgehenge,” constructed entirely from fudge, for times when mince pies and a yule log are insufficient. Santa is also featured in the display. At Treefest, numerous creative interpretations of the traditional Christmas tree are being exhibited at St Thomas’ Church in The Maltings, Salisbury.
