Wiltshire residents are being encouraged to sponsor a laptop this Christmas to facilitate digital access for those requiring it. Wiltshire Digital Drive (WDD) aims to combat digital poverty through its “The Gift of Tech Appeal,” which will supply laptops to individuals in need. WDD states that having access to a laptop enables people to apply for jobs, attend school, and more effectively manage their finances and social lives. Since August 2020, WDD has distributed over 3,400 devices free of charge to adults, children, and young people. One individual who received a laptop was referred to WDD, a community interest company, by the Wiltshire Centre for Independent Living. This person was provided with a laptop after experiencing difficulties securing employment as a university graduate, which had led to financial challenges. “Being registered as partially sighted at the age of 23 was not what I thought was on the cards for me as I was living a full and fun life and had big plans for my future,” they said. Within a month of receiving the laptop, they reported having found a job and being able to maintain contact with family and friends “so much easier than before.” Natalie Luckham, chief executive of WDD, commented that receiving a laptop could “transform someone’s future.” She added, “By sponsoring a laptop this Christmas, supporters will be opening doors and creating opportunities for someone less fortunate than themselves.” Luckham further stated, “I appreciate how tough things are for everyone right now, but without support I worry that we won’t be able to continue our work in the future.” The “Gift of Tech” appeal seeks to raise £25,000. These funds are intended for the refurbishment and subsequent redistribution of 550 laptops across the region in 2025. For updates, follow BBC Wiltshire on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
