John Mousinho suggested energy levels might have been a factor, a point Luke Williams could have used as a justification. During the first half of Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Swansea City, Portsmouth’s aggressive pressing strategy significantly challenged the home team, who struggled with ball possession more than at any other point this season on their home ground. Portsmouth manager Mousinho attributed his squad’s off-the-ball intensity, instrumental in both their scores, partly to it being their inaugural match in a three-week period. In contrast, Swansea had competed in two fixtures within the preceding six days, including an away game at Derby last Wednesday evening. Williams had the option to highlight these circumstances when addressing reporters following what proved to be a disappointing outcome for Swansea. He might have mentioned weariness as a contributing element, prior to commending his players’ resilience for recovering from a 2-0 deficit to secure a result from the match. Nevertheless, he chose not to pursue that line of reasoning. When questioned about the potential influence of exhaustion, Williams dismissed the notion. “That’s too easy,” he declared. “I am not going to let them (his players) have that because I care about them too much. There are going to be more times when they don’t feel like they have energy and if they hear me tell them that’s a problem, they might think ‘I feel low on energy’ before we start.” Williams did commend his players for their recovery, yet his sentiment leaned more towards frustration than contentment. Indeed, this occasion mirrored previous instances in Swansea’s season where potential points eluded them.
