A community garden located in Bradford is set to receive over £230,000 designated for the upkeep of its premises. According to the government, this financial allocation is intended to “secure the future” of Wibsey Community Gardens and will “go towards the renovating of this precious outdoor space to ensure it’s fit for purpose for future generations.” This sum forms part of a broader national investment of £36 million allocated to various community initiatives, aligning with government strategies aimed at fostering economic growth and enhancing living standards. Jen White, the individual responsible for managing Wibsey Community Gardens, expressed that she was “absolutely thrilled” by the prospect of being able to renovate the facility. She stated, “It has been a really hard push to get capital funding for our site.” She added, “We’ve got a brilliant team and we’ve worked really hard to make it happen.” Located within Wibsey Park, the garden cultivates fresh fruit, salad, and herbs, and also provides activities tailored for vulnerable adults and young individuals. The allocated funds are designated for the overall maintenance of the premises, which encompasses enhancements to the on-site toilet facilities. Ms. White commented, “We always struggle for capital funding.” She further explained, “We’ve been running the gardens since 2017 and leased it from the council since 2020.” She continued, “And it’s really hard, particularly in this climate, to find funding anywhere.” Concluding, she remarked, “It’s such a fabulous Christmas gift.” Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner stated, “We are delivering on our plan for change by saving these vital community assets to provide important opportunities for working people and their families.” She added, “These projects represent what is so special about communities across the UK – bringing people of all ages together, providing vital support and giving them a sense of purpose and belonging.” Among other initiatives in Yorkshire that are also receiving financial support are Shantona Women and Family Services in Harehills, Leeds, and the Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.
