A £700,000 renovation project for a road in Leicester’s West End is scheduled to commence on Sunday. According to Leicester City Council, the work on Western Road is expected to extend until spring. The council indicated that traffic restrictions would be implemented for what it described as “essential maintenance”. The initial phase of the project involves the removal of dropped kerbs that currently facilitate access to parking or loading zones over footpaths. Modifications are planned for the intersection with Briton Street to prioritize vehicles and cycles traveling on Briton Street. Improvements to carriageway drainage systems will also be undertaken. The council stated that the works would be carried out in brief segments “to minimise disruption” and would pause during the Christmas period. This initiative will necessitate rolling road closures and parking limitations. The completion of these initial stages is anticipated by late January, preceding the resurfacing of the primary carriageway on Western Road, specifically between Braunstone Gate and Briton Street, which is scheduled for spring 2025. Assistant Mayor Geoff Whittle affirmed that diversions would be “clearly signposted” and that disruption would “be kept to a minimum wherever possible”. The funding for this project originates from the Connecting Leicester programme, which receives support from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund.
