A display featuring thousands of red poppies, crafted through knitting and crocheting, has been installed as a central feature in a village ahead of Remembrance Day. This striking arrangement extends from the West Row sign, situated close to Mildenhall, Suffolk, to the war memorial located on the village green. Rosalind Hamill, who serves as the vice-chairwoman of the parish council, stated that she received an overwhelming number of offers after issuing a request for poppies on social media in January, with one woman contributing over 1,000. “The community spirit here in West Row is amazing, so I am proud of what the volunteers did together, as a community,” she informed BBC Suffolk. Over 40 skilled individuals from West Row and nearby communities responded to the appeal, creating numerous poppies. “It just grew and grew,” Ms Hamill remarked. She further explained, “A knit and natter group was created which met every Thursday, some wanted to do them in their own home in their own time, and it just got to be a great social event.” She concluded, “We had so many we created this river of tears, symbolising those that gave their lives.” Knitter Janice Killey expressed that she was “so proud” to have crafted 1,072 poppies and to have formed many new friendships during the process. The organisers assembled the “river” display at the parish offices, utilizing camouflage netting. This arrangement drew inspiration from components of a similar exhibition at the Tower of London a decade prior. Ms Hamill also noted that residents “absolutely love it,” citing hundreds of favourable comments posted on the community’s Facebook page.
