The police and crime commissioner (PCC) for the West Midlands has stated that a newly formed knife crime task force, spearheaded by the home secretary, will assist in efforts to “keep our communities safe”. This national collective aims to prevent, confront, and diminish “knife-enabled robbery”, concentrating on areas like the West Midlands, which registers the highest rate of knife crime offences in England and Wales. PCC Simon Foster and Chief Constable Craig Guildford participated in a meeting in London alongside Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, the policing minister, and representatives from other severely affected regions. The new group is set to meet monthly for the upcoming six months, a measure Mr Foster described as intended to “bring efforts and resources together”. Despite the significant level of knife crime, Mr Foster highlighted that recent statistics indicated a 13% reduction in serious youth violence across the West Midlands. Nevertheless, he emphasized: “We are not complacent and never will be.“I am keen to work with my counterparts across the country and with central government to see how we can bring efforts and resources together, to reduce knife-enabled robberies and crime and keep our communities safe.”” The task force, which unites senior officers and politicians from England’s seven most impacted areas, is a component of the government’s Safer Streets initiative, designed to halve knife crime over a decade.
