The West Midlands Ghostbusters community, whose members don 15kg proton packs and custom jumpsuits, is characterized by enthusiasm and an absence of criticism. This group, comprising 500 Facebook members from throughout the region, connects through a shared appreciation for the franchise, encompassing both its animated and cinematic iterations, and requires no prerequisite for participation. Dean Reilly established the group in 2021 during the lockdown period, having sought out individuals with similar interests online to forge connections and find an escape from the “real world.” He stated, “There can only be one Batman but pretty much anyone can be a Ghostbuster and adopt a fun persona.” Outside of his primary employment in digital marketing, the 49-year-old Birmingham resident participates in comic con events alongside the Ghostbusters team and discusses the film on a podcast. He commented, “It’s lovely to see friendships sprout up and a new tribe form, it’s an unexpected side effect.” Steve Robbins, aged 39, initially sought a Ghostbusters group to personally deliver a birthday cake to his daughter, which led to his involvement. Although costuming was not initially his preference, his fascination with the movie rapidly “spiralled out of control,” and two years later, he now dons “all the gear.” He shared, “Prior to the group, I didn’t feel comfortable in a social circle to let my hair down, but because nobody judges each other and everyone has a laugh, it’s easy to relax.” The Rowley Regis resident, also 39, further expressed that it was “incredible” to witness both of his daughters develop an “obsession” with the film and its latest installments. He added, “They’re finding a love for it and it brings us together as a family, gives us the opportunity to geek out.” Numerous Ghostbusters organizations globally have customized the franchise’s emblem with a unique adaptation. Mr. Reilly commented, “It’s a part where people get their creativity on, people really localise the area.” The West Midlands chapter frequently designs bespoke iterations of its logo, such as one featuring the region’s map and a microphone, which honors musicians including Ozzy Osbourne.
