The West Midlands Fire Service, which is currently facing demands for a public inquiry, has announced Ben Brook as its new chief fire officer. Mr. Brook previously held the position of chief fire officer for Warwickshire’s fire and rescue service. His appointment to the West Midlands Fire Service follows the departure of Oliver Lee in October, who resigned from his interim chief executive role, stating the service was “impossible to lead.” Greg Brackenridge, chairman of the service’s governing authority, also stepped down from his post during the same month. A statement indicated that Mr. Brook distinguished himself among a strong field of candidates due to his experience and capacity to initiate change. Mr. Brook commented that there would be “much to do” in his new capacity, noting the commitment of firefighters to their mission of “protecting and saving lives.” His appointment is scheduled for ratification by the fire authority at a meeting on Monday 25 November. In October, Wendy Morton, the MP for Aldridge Brownhills, called for an independent public inquiry concerning the leadership of the service. She stated that “deep rooted and troubling problems” existed, further adding, “I’m afraid there are too many unanswered questions.” Wayne Brown, who previously served as the fire service’s chief, was discovered deceased at his residence in January. At the time, he was under investigation regarding allegations that he had falsely asserted possession of a business administration qualification required for his position.
