The West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS), which has faced numerous challenges, has named its fourth senior leader within the current year. Simon Tuhill, formerly the deputy fire chief in Northamptonshire, has been appointed as the chief fire officer for WMFS. This appointment occurs almost a year after the death of former chief Wayne Brown, which happened one day after the service confirmed he was under investigation. This latest appointment follows a series of leadership changes. In September, Oliver Lee was named chief executive of the West Midlands Fire Authority (WMFA), but he was suspended in October due to a dispute concerning critical posts on LinkedIn, leading to his resignation that same month. Furthermore, earlier this week, Ben Brook withdrew from the position of chief fire officer only four days after his appointment had been made public. The governing fire authority also experienced a resignation in October, when its chairman, Greg Brackenridge, relinquished his position. Upon the announcement of his appointment, Mr. Tuhill stated that it was “an honour to take on the leadership mantle”. His assumption of the role also occurs after Conservative MP Wendy Morton requested an independent inquiry into the WMFA, which is responsible for overseeing the WMFS. Ms. Morton had previously criticized the authority for possessing “deep-rooted and troubling problems”. Addressing the issues encountered this year, Mr. Tuhill commented: “I know how hard staff have worked in difficult circumstances throughout 2024. I feel I am well placed to lead the service through this current period of uncertainty.” He added: “I know there are a range of challenges facing the service in the coming months, and I look forward to working with the Home Office and Local Government Association to help improve oversight and scrutiny.” Mr. Tuhill commenced his career in the fire service with the London Fire Brigade in 1998. During his time in London, he responded to significant incidents such as the 7/7 bombings, for which he earned a commendation, and the Grenfell Tower fire. His prior roles included serving as assistant chief fire officer for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and as Deputy Chief Fire Officer in Northamptonshire.
