A resident from west London has been ordered to pay a fine approaching £2,000 after illegally discarded refuse was discovered 20 miles (32km) away in Biggin Hill, located in south-east London. Bromley Council officers found the waste in May. It included a cardboard box bearing an address for a resident in Westbourne Park. Laura Estrada, of Great Western Road, failed to respond to legal notifications and was subsequently found guilty in her absence at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on 8 October. She received a £1,000 fine for not providing officers with the requested information, along with a victim surcharge of £440 and prosecution costs totaling £423. Construction debris and various household articles were found scattered amongst the litter, which obstructed a pathway leading to a plot on Oaklands Lane. Councillor Angela Page, the executive councillor for public protection and enforcement, commented: “We are tackling the menace of fly-tipping, with the support of residents.” She further explained: “What may not be known is that as well as clearing reports of dumped rubbish, we also investigate who may have been responsible.” Councillor Page also issued a warning: “This example is also a timely reminder to always make checks when asking someone else to dispose of waste on your behalf.” The council advised residents that bulky waste items can be disposed of at a reuse and recycling centre or by booking waste collections through the council’s official website.
