West Ham United has confirmed that striker Michail Antonio, who joined the club in 2015, is in a stable condition and “conscious and communicating” following a car crash. According to a statement released by West Ham on Saturday evening, Antonio is “currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.” The Premier League team further stated: “At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.” The club’s statement continued: “The club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course.” The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported its presence at the accident site in Epping on Saturday afternoon, where it extricated a man who was trapped inside his vehicle. The service stated: “Crews were called at 1.02pm this afternoon after reports of a road traffic collision involving one car.” It added: “Firefighters reported that a man was trapped in his car and worked to release him by 1.45pm. The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.” Essex Police confirmed that officers are investigating a serious collision involving a Ferrari and have requested witnesses and dashcam footage. Previously, West Ham had issued a statement conveying their “thoughts and prayers” were “with Michail, his family and friends.” Gary Lineker, presenter for BBC Match of the Day, conveyed to his audience: “We’d like to send our best wishes to Michail Antonio. Here’s hoping for a full and speedy recovery.” Antonio, a 34-year-old Jamaica international, transferred to West Ham from Nottingham Forest in 2015, and has since achieved 68 goals across 268 league matches for the team. West Ham is scheduled to play Wolves in their upcoming Premier League fixture on Monday at 20:00 GMT.
