The Wales national team currently holds the 10th position globally, having secured victories in four out of 11 Test matches played in 2024. The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has officially commenced its search for a new head coach for the Wales women’s team. This development follows Ioan Cunningham’s departure earlier this month. Cunningham, who had led the team for three years, stepped down by what the WRU described as “mutual agreement,” concluding a challenging year both on and off the field. During 2024, the Welsh national side recorded only four wins from 11 Test matches, and the governing body for Welsh rugby acknowledged significant shortcomings in its management of player contract discussions throughout the summer period. According to the WRU, the incoming head coach will oversee a 37-member squad composed of WRU-contracted athletes and “will be expected to deliver and drive the performance and culture to the highest standard.” The individual selected for the role must “have experience at professional, national and international level.” Furthermore, the WRU anticipates this person will cultivate essential relationships, play a crucial strategic part in nurturing Welsh talent, and work towards positioning Wales as “one of the top five nations in the world.” While Wales presently holds the 10th position globally, the team previously achieved third place in two consecutive Six Nations tournaments (in 2022 and 2023) and secured qualification for WXV1 in 2023, prior to their recent decline. Abi Tierney, the chief executive of the WRU, commented: “This is a critical appointment for the Welsh Rugby Union, and we are looking for candidates of the highest quality with a proven record in high performance.” She added, “With a Six Nations and a World Cup in 2025, this appointment will play an integral role within our strategy for Welsh rugby.” Tierney further stated, “We need someone who will take the team to the next phase of professionalism and lead the development of a robust and vibrant team dynamic.”
