Healthcare services in Wales are slated to receive an additional hundreds of millions of pounds next year, designated to tackle record-high waiting times. The Welsh government has announced an extra £1.5bn for public services within its £26bn budget, effective from next April. All departments are set to see an increase, with transport receiving the most substantial percentage boost, partly intended for the upgrade of the Heads of the Valleys road. Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford stated that the budget will “provide faster treatment for thousands and thousands of people in Wales”. However, concerns have emerged regarding the portion of the budget that will be consumed by increased National Insurance (NI) costs, with the Welsh Conservatives alleging that “hundreds of millions” could be returned to the Treasury. Plaid Cymru criticized the government’s proposals as “underwhelming” and “unambitious”. Drakeford, in response, indicated that Plaid would face a “day of reckoning” concerning their vote on the budget. To secure the budget’s passage, the Welsh government requires the backing of an opposition politician in the Senedd.
