Ioan and Garan Croft, twin brothers from Crymych, who previously trained with their father at Cardigan ABC, are set to transition to professional boxing on 7 December. Having demonstrated their abilities at the amateur level, the twins will travel to Waterford, Republic of Ireland, for their inaugural professional bout. Earlier this year in February, the Crofts withdrew from Team GB’s boxing programme, a decision made just five months prior to the Paris Olympics. Their departure stemmed from dissatisfaction with alterations to weight classes, a rule modification that would have permitted only one of the brothers to qualify for the Games in France. Despite what has been a challenging year for the brothers, Garan expressed confidence in their readiness to display their abilities at the top tier. He stated, “One of the reasons we left was because we were competing for the same place in the Olympic Games,” adding, “When you’ve done it for years it’s hard. But now, we can look forward to training, look forward to competing and not having to compete against my brother. “It’s just easier, happier this way.”” A bus filled with supporters from Crymych is scheduled to travel to the Republic of Ireland this weekend to cheer on the young boxers as they aim to establish their professional careers. Ioan conveyed his desire to celebrate with those who have backed them throughout their journey, particularly as they face their most significant challenge to date. He commented, “It will be a very special moment on the night,” and added, “Hopefully we can celebrate with friends and people who have come to support from the area.” In addition to their own extensive experience, the twins are now receiving guidance from a former world lightweight champion. Manchester’s FOX ABC gym has served as the training base for Ioan and Garan since their departure from GB boxing, with Anthony Crolla overseeing their training camp. Crolla remarked, “They’re a lot more talented than I ever was,” and continued, “In this game you need a little bit of luck to get to the very top, no matter how good you are. “But if they get the luck, to go with not just the talent but how hard they work, they have got a great chance of going all the way.”” This transition presents a significant opportunity for the Welsh boxers to achieve considerable success, as both are prepared to demonstrate their capability on a prominent platform. Ioan and Garan Croft aim for a successful debut, representing both Crymych and Wales in their professional endeavors.
