Plymouth Argyle’s head coach, Wayne Rooney, has voiced criticism regarding his team’s “naive” defending following their 2-1 home defeat against Swansea City. This result means Rooney’s side has secured only two victories in the last two months. The visiting Welsh team managed just two shots on target, yet goals from Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen were sufficient to hand Argyle their third consecutive loss. This defeat marks only one win for Rooney’s squad in their last 10 matches, causing them to drop to second from bottom in the Championship standings. Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Rooney stated, “The goals we conceded were naive to say the least, and that was really disappointing from our point of view,” adding, “I think there were positives within the game – certainly an improvement on the last two games – but ultimately tonight was about the result and we fell short.” Mike Phelan, formerly an assistant manager at Manchester United, joined the Argyle bench for the first time since his appointment as Rooney’s number two on Sunday. Rooney continues to face challenges with key players sidelined, particularly in attack. Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker, and Muhamed Tijani are all expected to be out until early 2025, as is captain Joe Edwards. Despite these absences, Rooney emphasized that the remaining players must cultivate resilience to compete effectively in games. He commented, “We know we’re going through a difficult moment at the minute,” and observed, “Sometimes when you are going through a difficult moment those small things become big things and seem to go against you, and certainly they have tonight.” He continued, “We have to fight through it. We’re gradually getting players back, which is key for us.” Rooney acknowledged the significant impact of missing key personnel, stating, “We’re probably missing our front three still, missing our captain until the new year – that’s a big loss and any team would feel it in this league, the quality of players we’re missing.” However, he stressed the collective responsibility of the current squad: “But it’s the lads who have come in – it’s a squad game. We have to do better – we have to find a way to show more resilience.” Addressing the team’s youth and upcoming schedule, Rooney added, “I know we’ve got a lot of young players in there as well, but we have to become men very quickly because it doesn’t get any easier. We’ve got a really tough game on Saturday, then a really tough fixture list over Christmas.” He concluded by reiterating the necessity for mental fortitude: “We need to find a way to find that resilience and dig in and stay in games more than what we are doing.” Post navigation Livingstone’s decisive half-century in T10 League secures victory Fulham Enters Top Half of Premier League Following Draw with Tottenham
