Together at Christmas, an organization based in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, which provides complimentary Christmas lunches to individuals who are lonely and isolated, is actively seeking volunteers. For the past 11 years, the group has convened every Christmas Day to offer meals and companionship to those who might otherwise spend the holiday by themselves. Although it is currently November, the event’s organizers are initiating preparations and aiming to assemble a team of assistants. Lead organiser Mark Triggs stated, “It is a massive team effort.” He further specified the need for various roles, including, “An entertainer would be lovely,” and “Anyone who’s willing to host tables, or serve tables, work in the kitchens, plate up food, do transport of deliveries and ferry people to the rugby club.” The event’s new venue this year, Bridgnorth Rugby Club, necessitates an increased number of individuals to provide transportation. Triggs explained, “We will have more of a transport requirement this year, with it being out of town.” A professional supplier provides the food, which a professional chef will prepare on the day of the event. He added, “It is really all hands on deck, with a team of sous chefs who are preparing vegetables and doing gravy and stuffing and things like that.” Beyond the hot meal, residents from across the town also contribute additional items for the attendees. Mr Triggs noted, “All of the schools, and indeed the scouts, make Christmas cards, which go in goody bags for each of the guests that we have coming along.” He further emphasized broad community participation, stating, “Everyone gets involved, from businesses and charities, the town council and so on.” He concluded, “There are lots of jobs to be done.” A meeting for volunteers is scheduled for Wednesday at the rugby club to commence event planning. Mr Triggs extended an invitation for interested individuals to attend the meeting or get in touch with the group. Follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. Copyright 2024 BBC.
