A team of knitters dedicated 4,500 hours to produce a massive Christmas jumper designed for a gritter vehicle. The Ripon Community Poppy Project, recently honored with the King’s highest award for volunteering, undertook this assignment at the request of Econ Engineering. According to the winter maintenance vehicle manufacturer, the 896-sq-ft jumper and accompanying hat are intended to “keep Goldie the Gritter warm” throughout an active season. Stuart Martin, a member of the volunteer group, commented, “We didn’t realise it was going to be this big!” The creation, measuring 32ft by 28ft (10m x 8.5m), was revealed at a Ripon warehouse to local schoolchildren and stands as one of the group’s most substantial projects. Over a 12-month period, the 35 volunteers collectively invested 4,500 hours into crafting the jumper and its various accessories, utilizing 1,130 balls of wool. Mr. Martin stated that Econ had contacted them to inquire about their interest in producing a sweater. He explained that the group responded with an “immediate yes,” citing the company’s prior support for the volunteers with Ripon’s remembrance garden and metal soldier silhouettes. Hazel Barker, another organizer, added, “We thought we’d be doing 26 jumpers for all these gritter operatives, not a wagon. But it’s been great. We’re full of mad ideas and they [the knitters] fully expect something fantastic coming up.” Econ announced that Goldie the Gritter is scheduled to undertake a 900-mile tour across the UK, including visits to schools. These educational visits aim to educate pupils on topics such as road safety and winter maintenance.
