The Nottingham Rockets volleyball club has been compelled to cancel its games and training sessions after a malfunctioning boiler rendered a sports hall “unsafe” for its members. The club, which has operated since the 1960s, typically trains hundreds of individuals at Southglade Leisure Centre within the city. However, following the breakdown of the boiler at the Nottingham City Council-run facility approximately a month ago, the team reported that the building’s conditions had made the courts slippery and unusable. Consequently, all volleyball activities at the centre have been suspended indefinitely. Simon Elmore, the club’s safeguarding and welfare officer, explained that fluctuating hot and cold conditions can lead to condensation forming on the courts, resulting in a wet and unsafe playing surface. He stated, “It’s very, very unfortunate and there’s not a lot we can do about it.” Over 200 club members have now missed more than a month of training, and several fixtures have been forfeited as they await the necessary repairs. “It was a very strange situation where until the day or the time, the leisure centre couldn’t make a decision as to whether they could run a session or not, or whether it was safe to do so,” Mr Elmore commented. He further noted that the club’s limited financial resources prevented them from being able to afford alternative facilities elsewhere. Ancel Mitchell, the club’s treasurer, indicated that the cancellations have impacted numerous junior league matches and a junior tournament. She remarked, “The juniors were very upset that they weren’t able to partake in their fixture and we have a lot of adults who are keen to keep their fitness levels up in the run-up to Christmas and to play volleyball.” A spokesperson for Nottingham Active, the organization responsible for managing the venue, confirmed that it has “explored interim arrangements while finalising a long-term fix.” They added, “The repair process for the boiler system is taking longer than initially expected,” and concluded, “We are currently awaiting a start date from the contractors.” Post navigation Rangers Supporters Ponder European Success Amidst Domestic Form Concerns Dundee United’s Character to be Tested by Demanding Fixture Schedule
